Premature atherosclerosis and autoimmune inflammatory disease

چکیده

Patients with polymyalgia rheumatica have been shown to have an increased risk of peripheral arterial disease on longitudinal followup. Possible explanations for this include premature atherosclerosis related to chronic inflammation, as with other inflammatory rheumatological conditions. Alternatively, polymyalgia rheumatica can be associated with vasculitis, even in the absence of clinical giant cell arteritis, and peripheral vascular disease may represent subclinical vasculitis. Further work is required to elucidate the reasons for this increased risk. Currently, it would remain reasonable to aggressively control modifiable atherosclerotic risk factors.

Leader Inflammation-mediated rheumatic diseases and atherosclerosis

For over 20 years, premature coronary heart disease has been recognised as a major determinant of morbidity and mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Less appreciated is the fact that the same holds true for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). These two autoimmune diseases share a propensity to target women of childbearing age and a treatment armamentarium that inc...

Role of Interleukin-37 in Inflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases

Interleukin-1 family 7 (IL-1F7) is a novel member of IL-1F cytokines. IL-1F7 is more commonly known as IL-37. IL-37 join the α-subunit of the IL-18 receptor, or IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP), and binding of these proteins can enhance the IL-18 suppression. IL-37 also translocates to the cell nucleus and affects gene transcription. IL-37 inhibits the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen-activated pr...

The Effect of Mycophenolate Mofetil on Disease Development in the gld.apoE−/− Mouse Model of Accelerated Atherosclerosis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a systemic autoimmune disease that is characterized by autoantibody production and inflammatory disease involving multiple organs. Premature atherosclerosis is a common complication of SLE and results in substantial morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD). The reasons for the premature atherosclerosis in SLE are incompletely understood, al...

Immunity and early atherosclerosis in the course of systemic lupus erythematosus, mixed connective tissue disease and antiphospholipid syndrome

Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the arteries associated with various risk factors that promote lipid abnormalities, development and progression of atherosclerotic lesions, plaque rupture, and vascular thrombosis. Atherosclerosis is accelerated in autoimmune diseases. Non-invasive investigations showed increased intima-media thickness (IMT), carotid plaque, and coronary arte...
